In this tutorial I will show you how to scan for open proxies using Proxy Hunter. This involves scanning ranges of IP addresses on selected ports.

It really is very simple.

Please bear in mind that it can take a long time to find decent-sized proxy lists by scanning. So please don't expect to find hundreds of proxies in just a few hours. Be prepared to leave your computer scanning for days and weeks on end to find hundreds of proxies.

There are no magic shortcuts, so don't bother asking and looking for them.

Honest people don't need large lists of proxies, so don't bother bitching to me about not being able to get big lists if you are planning to crack some tedious porn pay site or send spam emails.

◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆

WARNING: This tutorial involves the scanning of remote computers, which may be against the Terms of Service of your ISP. It is possible that the owners of the computers you scan may complain to your ISP and your ISP may warn you or terminate your account as a result.

◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆

What you will need
- Proxy Hunter v3.1 beta 1, which can be downloaded from this page.

- A proxy checker to test the open proxies you find for anonymity (Proxy Hunter doesn't test for anonymity). AA Tools, Charon and Proxyrama are all good ones.

- (Optional) Sam Spade, which is a nice WHOIS lookup tool and is useful for selecting IP ranges to scan.

◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆

Getting started with Proxy Hunter

Install the program. Open the program. Then select Change Options from the System menu. This is the window you will see....

<script type="text/javascript">
var GB_ROOT_DIR = "http://forums.proxy-heaven.com/greybox/";
</script><script type="text/javascript" src="greybox/AJS.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="greybox/AJS_fx.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="greybox/gb_scripts.js"></script>
<link href="greybox/gb_styles.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />

The image above shows my settings. I have 1MBit connection and 256MB RAM and I find that I can go up to 600 parallel connections for serching.

The Connect Timeout for searching should be changed in different circumstances, For example, 1 second is fine for fast ranges, but I would probably use 3 seconds for slower Indian or Chinese ranges as they are generally less responsive.

If you check the box that says "Ping and then connect" then Proxy Hunter will do a ping sweep of IP addresses first before scanning ports on only the responsive hosts. Keeping it unchecked means that Proxy Hunter will scan all chosen ports on all IP addresses in your selected range. There is no [i]right[/] way to do this, but I generally check the box if I am scanning more than 5 ports, and leave it unchecked otherwise. Checking the box leads to more inefficient scanning in the sense that it will miss a lot of live hosts, but it seems to yield an optimum number of proxies when scanning a lot of ports.

Intuition is the best judge of what settings to use and you will gain this with time.

Next, click on the "Verification Data Options" tab. Click "add" and give it the name "Google". Select "key words" as the "Type". Enter http://www.google.com/imghp?hl=en in the URL field. Then enter the word "comprehensive" in the keywords field (without the quotation marks of course).

The other two tabs aren't very important just now.

NOTE: Use my settings as a guide. After a while you will find the settings that suit you.

◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆

Setting up tasks

In the "Tasks" tab, select "Add task". Select "Searching Task" and click "next". Click on "Add" and simply enter a starting IP address and an end address like this and click OK...

Then you can add as many more tasks as you like. Click "next" when you're finished.

Now we are ready to select ports to scan. Click "Add" and you will see this window...

From the drop-down menu you can select "Port Range" or "Single Port", but a mistake in the program means that they are mixed up. So, select "Port Range" if you want to add a single port. In this case I have selected port 1080 (a common socks port) and selected SOCKS (it will scan for both SOCKS 4+5 protocols). Also be sure to check the "Must Try" box. If you don't, then Proxy Hunter will only scan the port if it gets a good result from another port marked "Must Try" on the same IP.

Click OK and add other ports as desired...

<script type="text/javascript">
var GB_ROOT_DIR = "http://forums.proxy-heaven.com/greybox/";
</script><script type="text/javascript" src="greybox/AJS.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="greybox/AJS_fx.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="greybox/gb_scripts.js"></script>
<link href="greybox/gb_styles.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />

You will now see your task or tasks in the queue...

<script type="text/javascript">
var GB_ROOT_DIR = "http://forums.proxy-heaven.com/greybox/";
</script><script type="text/javascript" src="greybox/AJS.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="greybox/AJS_fx.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="greybox/gb_scripts.js"></script>
<link href="greybox/gb_styles.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />

You are now ready to go.

◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆

Results

Once you have set up the tasks, click the blue triangle button in the top-left of the window to begin scanning.

Leave it to scan until the task is finished.

When it has finished, you will see that most of the status types will be "unknown", "verification timeout", "need authentication" or "protocol error".... and hopefully there will also be some "GOOD" results. Use the "remove" button to delete all but the "GOOD" results...

<script type="text/javascript">
var GB_ROOT_DIR = "http://forums.proxy-heaven.com/greybox/";
</script><script type="text/javascript" src="greybox/AJS.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="greybox/AJS_fx.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="greybox/gb_scripts.js"></script>
<link href="greybox/gb_styles.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />

Remember that it can take several hours just to get the results in the image above. Sometimes I don't delete the "verification timeout" one and I retest them to find that some of them are working.

You can then use the "Export" button to copy them all to a text file or you can copy them to your clipboard by clicking on one of the results and using Control+A to select them and right-click and select "copy".

Now you should import them into a proxy checker program to see which ones are anonymous.

Other stuff

- If you are running Windows XP SP2, then make sure that you have patched your computer to allow more simultaneous connection.

- Using a router may result in big problems. Many routers cannot handle the number of connections I have use in this tutorial and this may result in your connection being totally choked. Unfortunately, I have no solution for this, short of switching to a direct connection.

- When looking for ranges and ports to scan, look at proxy lists and examine the trends. Intuition, remember.

- Some ranges may yield a lot of good results, but the proxies you find may last only a short time and may even have stopped working by the time your scan has finished. This may be because the IP addresses in the range are dynamically assigned rather than being static, so the hosts are changing IP address all the time. When you see lists of port 1080 socks where they are all contained in a small IP range, they usually don't last long.

- Ranges with a lot of port 1080 socks may also have a lot of proxies on other HTTP ports such as 6588,4480 or 8080. Intuition Very Happy

- This site has very up to date lists of IP ranges sorted by country:
